Okay, so this is basically my first tutorial with better editing. Anyway, the commands i use for mencoder are the following:

FIRST PASS:

mencoder 1.mov -o 1.flv -vf scale=480:-3,expand=480:360 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=flv:vpass=1 -nosound

SECOND PASS:

mencoder 1.mov -o 1.flv -af resample=44100:2:1 -sws 9 -vf scale=480:-3,expand=480:360 -of lavf -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=flv:vpass=2:vbitrate=800:trell:v4mv:mv0:mbd=2:cbp:aic:cmp=3:subcmp=3 -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:br=128:mode=0

NOTE: Theres an unwanted space between “v4″ and “mv”, make sure you take it out if you copy paste.

FAQ (Please read the whole thing before asking)

Q. FLV1 codec sucks, can I use any other?

A. No, youtube will transcode your video if you use anything else, no matter what.

Q. My videos say they are 11 minutes long, but they are actually less, whats going on?

A. Thats the trick, you report a higher time to youtube so it believes your video actually has a low bitrate, it wont transcode it that way, THERES NO WAY AROUND THAT.

Q. mencoder doesn’t open when i click it.

A. mencoder doesn’t have a GUI you can’t use by clicking it, you need to open a command prompt and work it from there, WATCH THE VIDEO!

Q. I get lots of Skipping Frame! warnings when i encode.

A. mencoder doesn’t like your video, try passing it to xvid first using virtualdub http://www.virtualdub.org/

Q. mencoder just crashes, i have tried everything but it wont work.

A. Try installing the essential codecs , you can find them on the download mencoder link.

Q. mencoder is just a pain in the ass, I cant understand it, is there any other option?

A. Yes, you can use any encoding program that supports flv1 codec (like riva or imtoo) xtmnx has an excelent videotutorial for riva, heres the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQZIqLRB5Do

Q. Why must the output file be below 28MB?

A. Because thats your limit, an 11 minutes (MAX time) video at 349kbps (Max Bitrate) is 28MB, if you exceed that, youtube will transcode your video and make it look like crap.

Q. Is there a way around these limits?

A. Only if you have an OLD director account, then you no longer have the 28MB limit as you can edit the time as long as you want, you will have a 100MB limit then. ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET ONE OF THOSE ACCOUNTS ANYMORE.

Q. Its too much work for something irrelevant

A. Not for me, so take your bs comments elsewhere.

Q. What program did you use to record the screen?

A. I used Camtasia Studio 5 for recording and editing.
